For patients who have lost a tooth or had a tooth extracted, dental implants represent one of the best solutions. With dental implants, you can replace your lost teeth with healthy prostheses; these dental crowns will look and function similar to natural ones.

For some patients, the road to implants can be a bit more challenging. This is especially true for patients who have lost bone mass in their jaw, making proper implant positioning more difficult. This issue can typically be resolved via the regeneration of bone, specifically through a bone graft procedure.

Valley OMS has extensive experience providing bone grafts of all kinds, including the common sinus lift graft. We welcome you to learn more about this dental treatment.

What is a Sinus Lift Graft?

Bone grafts help regenerate bone material via the transplantation of bone, most often as a way of preparing the patient for dental implants. The sinus lift graft is a specific type of bone graft that increases the amount of bone available in the upper jaw in the molar area. The process involves not only the placement of new bone tissue but also the repositioning of sinus membranes to make room for the implants in those patients whose sinus floor is too low, allowing us to place implants that are long enough.

A simple way to think about this approach is that it makes your upper jawbone taller and thus provides more surface area for dental implants to be anchored firmly into place.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Sinus Lift Graft?

If you have lost teeth or anticipate having teeth extracted in the molar area of the upper jaw, then you are likely a good candidate for dental implants. During your initial consultation, your doctor will perform a physical evaluation of your teeth, gums, and jaw, ensuring there is adequate bone mass for implants. If there is insufficient bone, your doctor will talk with you about options for bone grafting and potentially for a sinus lift graft.

The likelihood that you will need a bone graft increases significantly if much time elapses between your tooth loss and your implant surgery. As such, we would always recommend that patients who lose teeth pursue tooth replacement as soon as they are able.
